A Presumed Male of the Parthenogenetic Amphipod Corophium Bonnellii (Milne-Edwards)
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 11 May 2009
Extract
Corophium bonnellii (Milne-Edwards) has been suspected of being parthenogenetic for more than fifty years (see Crawford, 1937) and this suggestion has been supported by recent breeding experiments (Moore, 1981). Many thousands of specimens have been examined by taxonomists and ecologists from a wide geographical area in both hemispheres, yet only Toulmond & Truchot (1964) have claimed to have found a male. No description or figures were presented by Toulmond & Touchot (1964) to support their contention.
