The admissible representations of a real reductive group G are known by work of Langlands, Knapp, Zuckerman and Vogan. This paper describes an effective algorithm for computing the irreducible representations of G with regular integral infinitesimal character. The algorithm also describes structure theory of G, including the orbits of K(ℂ) (a complexified maximal compact subgroup) on the flag variety. This algorithm has been implemented on a computer by the second author, as part of the ‘Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations’ project.

The arithmetic is interpreted in all the groups of Richard Thompson and Graham Higman, as well as in other groups of piecewise affine permutations of an interval which generalize the groups of Thompson and Higman. In particular, the elementary theories of all these groups are undecidable. Moreover, Thompson's group F and some of its generalizations interpret the arithmetic without parameters.

In this article we show that the polylogarithmic currents introduced by Andrey Levin describe the polylogarithm of an abelian scheme at the topological level. From this result, which had been conjectured by Andrey Levin himself, we deduce a method to explicit the Eisenstein classes of abelian schemes at the topological level. These classes are of special interest since they have a motivic origin by a result of Guido Kings. In a forthcoming work entitled ‘Les classes d'Eisenstein des variétés de Hilbert–Blumenthal’, the results of the present article are used to prove that the Eisenstein classes of Hilbert–Blumenthal varieties degenerate at the boundary of the Baily–Borel compactification of the base in a special value of an L-function associated to the underlying totally real number field, and we get as a corollary a non-vanishing result for some of these Eisenstein classes in this geometric situation.

We construct a bad field in characteristic zero. That is, we construct an algebraically closed field which carries a notion of dimension analogous to Zariski-dimension, with an infinite proper multiplicative subgroup of dimension one, and such that the field itself has dimension two. This answers a longstanding open question by Zilber.

We describe explicitly the Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives (and give a ‘differential graded enhancement’ of it). This enables us to able to verify that DMgm ℚ is (anti)isomorphic to Hanamura's (k).

We obtain a description of all subcategories (including those of Tate motives) and of all localizations of . We construct a conservative weight complex functor ; t gives an isomorphism . A motif is mixed Tate whenever its weight complex is. Over finite fields the Beilinson–Parshin conjecture holds if and only if tℚ is an equivalence.

For a realization D of we construct a spectral sequence S (the spectral sequence of motivic descent) converging to the cohomology of an arbitrary motif X. S is ‘motivically functorial’; it gives a canonical functorial weight filtration on the cohomology of D(X). For the ‘standard’ realizations this filtration coincides with the usual one (up to a shift of indices). For the motivic cohomology this weight filtration is non-trivial and appears to be quite new.

We define the (rational) length of a motif M; modulo certain ‘standard’ conjectures this length coincides with the maximal length of the weight filtration of the singular cohomology of M.

We study basic properties of the category of smooth representations of a p-adic group G with coefficients in any commutative ring R in which p is invertible. Our main purpose is to prove that Hecke algebras are Noetherian whenever R is; this question arose naturally with Bernstein's fundamental work for R = ℂ, in which case he proved this Noetherian property. In a first step, we prove that Noetherianity would follow from a generalization of the so-called second adjointness property between parabolic functors, also due to Bernstein for complex representations. Then, to attack this second adjointness, we introduce and study ‘parahoric functors’ between representations of groups of integral points of smooth integral models of G and of their ‘Levi’ subgroups. Applying our general study to Bruhat-Tits parahoric models, we get second adjointness for minimal parabolic groups. For non-minimal parabolic subgroups, we have to restrict to classical and linear groups, and use smooth models associated with Bushnell-Kutzko and Stevens semi-simple characters. The same strategy should apply to ‘tame’ groups, using Yu's smooth models and generic characters.

We apply the collapse techniques to Poizat's red differential field in order to obtain differentially closed fields of Morley rank ω·2 each equipped with an additive definable subgroup of rank ω. By means of the logarithmic derivative, we obtain a green field of rank ω·2 with a multiplicative definable divisible subgroup containing the field of constants, which is again definable in the reduct of the green field.

We associate two almost Cp-representations to a (ϕ,Γ)-module, and we compute their dimensions and heights. As a corollary, we get a full faithfulness result for Be-representations.

For a ∇-module M over the ring K[[x]]0 of bounded functions over a p-adic local field K we define the notion of special and generic log-growth filtrations on the base of the power series development of the solutions and horizontal sections. Moreover, if M also admits a Frobenius structure then it is endowed with generic and special Frobenius slope filtrations. We will show that in the case of M a ϕ–∇-module of rank 2, the Frobenius polygon for M and the log-growth polygon for its dual, Mv, coincide, this is proved by showing explicit relationships between the filtrations. This will lead us to formulate some conjectural links between the behaviours of the filtrations arising from the log-growth and Frobenius structures of the differential module. This coincidence between the two polygons was only known for the hypergeometric cases by Dwork.

We prove the modularity of minimally ramified ordinary residually reducible p-adic Galois representations of an imaginary quadratic field F under certain assumptions. We first exhibit conditions under which the residual representation is unique up to isomorphism. Then we prove the existence of deformations arising from cuspforms on GL2(AF) via the Galois representations constructed by Taylor et al. We establish a sufficient condition (in terms of the non-existence of certain field extensions which in many cases can be reduced to a condition on an L-value) for the universal deformation ring to be a discrete valuation ring and in that case we prove an R=T theorem. We also study reducible deformations and show that no minimal characteristic 0 reducible deformation exists.

We obtain second integral moments of automorphic L-functions on adele groups GL2 over arbitrary number fields, by a spectral decomposition using the structure and representation theory of adele groups GL1 and GL2. This requires reformulation of the notion of Poincaré series, replacing the collection of classical Poincaré series over GL2(ℚ) or GL2(ℚ(i)) with a single, coherent, global object that makes sense over a number field. This is the first expression of integral moments in adele-group terms, distinguishing global and local issues, and allowing uniform application to number fields. When specialized to the field of rational numbers ℚ, we recover the classical results on moments.

Let K be an arbitrary number field, and let ρ : Gal(/K) → GL2(E) be a nearly ordinary irreducible geometric Galois representation. In this paper, we study the nearly ordinary deformations of ρ. When K is totally real and ρ is modular, results of Hida imply that the nearly ordinary deformation space associated to ρ contains a Zariski dense set of points corresponding to ‘automorphic’ Galois representations. We conjecture that if K is not totally real, then this is never the case, except in three exceptional cases, corresponding to: (1) ‘base change’, (2) ‘CM’ forms, and (3) ‘even’ representations. The latter case conjecturally can only occur if the image of ρ is finite. Our results come in two flavours. First, we prove a general result for Artin representations, conditional on a strengthening of the Leopoldt Conjecture. Second, when K is an imaginary quadratic field, we prove an unconditional result that implies the existence of ‘many’ positive-dimensional components (of certain deformation spaces) that do not contain infinitely many classical points. Also included are some speculative remarks about ‘p-adic functoriality’, as well as some remarks on how our methods should apply to n-dimensional representations of Gal(/ℚ) when n > 2.

We extend Penrose's peeling model for the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the scalar wave equation at null infinity on asymptotically flat backgrounds, which is well understood for flat space-time, to Schwarzschild and the asymptotically simple space-times of Corvino–Schoen/Chrusciel–Delay. We combine conformal techniques and vector field methods: a naive adaptation of the ‘Morawetz vector field’ to a conformal rescaling of the Schwarzschild metric yields a complete scattering theory on Corvino–Schoen/Chrusciel–Delay space-times. A good classification of solutions that peel arises from the use of a null vector field that is transverse to null infinity to raise the regularity in the estimates. We obtain a new characterization of solutions admitting a peeling at a given order that is valid for both Schwarzschild and Minkowski space-times. On flat space-time, this allows larger classes of solutions than the characterizations used since Penrose's work. Our results establish the validity of the peeling model at all orders for the scalar wave equation on the Schwarzschild metric and on the corresponding Corvino–Schoen/Chrusciel–Delay space-times.

In this paper, we prove that the first occurrence of global theta liftings from any orthogonal group to either symplectic groups or metaplectic groups can be characterized completely in terms of the location of poles of certain Eisenstein series. This extends the work of Kudla and Rallis and the work of Moeglin to all orthogonal groups. As applications, we obtain results about basic structures of cuspidal automorphic representations and the domain of holomorphy of twisted standard L-functions.

We continue our study of the reduction of PEL Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at primes p at which the group defining the Shimura variety ramifies. We describe ‘good’ p-adic integral models of these Shimura varieties and study their étale local structure. In the present paper we mainly concentrate on the case of unitary groups for a ramified quadratic extension. Some of our results are applications of the theory of twisted affine flag varieties that we developed in a previous paper.

Let (X, cX) be a convex projective surface equipped with a real structure. The space of stable maps carries different real structures induced by cX and any order two element τ of permutation group Sk acting on marked points. Each corresponding real part ℝτ is a real normal projective variety. As the singular locus is of codimension bigger than two, these spaces thus carry a first Stiefel–Whitney class for which we determine a representative in the case k = c1(X)d − 1 where c1(X) is the first Chern class of X. Namely, we give a homological description of these classes in term of the real part of boundary divisors of the space of stable maps.

Vincent Lafforgue's bivariant K-theory for Banach algebras is invariant in the second variable under a rather general notion of Morita equivalence. In particular, the ordinary topological K-theory for Banach algebras is invariant under Morita equivalences.

In this paper we consider the dynamical system involved by the Ricci operator on the space of Kähler metrics of a Fano manifold. Nadel has defined an iteration scheme given by the Ricci operator and asked whether it has some non-trivial periodic points. First, we prove that no such periodic points can exist. We define the inverse of the Ricci operator and consider the dynamical behaviour of its iterates for a Fano Kähler–Einstein manifold. Then we define a finite-dimensional procedure to give an approximation of Kähler–Einstein metrics using this iterative procedure and apply it on ℂℙ2 blown up in three points.

We propose a geometric method to measure the wild ramification of a smooth étale sheaf along the boundary. Using the method, we study the graded quotients of the logarithmic ramification groups of a local field of characteristic p > 0 with arbitrary residue field. We also define the characteristic cycle of an ℓ-adic sheaf, satisfying certain conditions, as a cycle on the logarithmic cotangent bundle and prove that the intersection with the 0-section computes the characteristic class, and hence the Euler number.
