Suppose on an ocean voyage a ship, cruising speed 25 knots, using 30·2 tons of fuel oil daily, encounters winds and heavy seas, forcing the ship to reduce her speed to 12 knots using 9·5 tons of fuel oil daily (Fig. 1). The ship in point A is bound for destination D at a distance of 63 miles on a course of 270°.
