Although each regular issue of JMR covers a wide range of materials research topics, special Focus Issues devoted entirely or in part to a single topic are published several times a year. These Focus Issues allow the journal to provide a comprehensive look at the current research in a particular area of interest to JMR readers.

JMR publishes Materials stability in the non-equilibrium environment of an electrochemical energy storage system is a critical issue for device operation and reliability. The shelf life of primary and rechargeable cell chemistries, together with the cycle life of rechargeable systems, are specifically dependent on the mechanical, crystallographic, morphological, and chemical stability of the electrodes and the separators.

Focus Issue: Multiscale Materials Modeling of Interface-mediated Thermomechanical Behavior
Submission Deadline: December 1, 2020
This JMR Focus Issue provides a forum for discussing recent developments in computational/experimental techniques and their applications to understand the heterogeneous materials’ mechanical and transport behavior across a broad range of length scales. The knowledge gained may be used to support the development of new materials with desired strength, ductility, toughness, thermal-/corrosion-/irradiation-resistance, and even a combination of these resistances.

JMR publishes new challenges and opportunities arise in multi-material additive manufacturing, which calls for new research in the science of new additive manufacturing processes, material design and characterizations, computational design and optimization methodologies needed to advance the state of art of realizing multi-functional products composed of multiple- and stimuli-responsive materials.

Focus Issue: 3D printing of biomedical materials and devices
Submission deadline: February 26, 2021
The goal of this JMR Focus Issue, our intent is to capture the perspectives of professionals from different disciplines including science, engineering, and medicine to application of 3D printing in biomaterials and biomedical devices. More specifically, this Focus Issue is geared toward understanding of the structure-process-property relationship involving different materials under in vitro, in vivo and in silico environments.

Focus Issue: Advanced Nanocatalysts for Electrochemical Energy Storage and Generation: Batteries, Supercapacitors, Electrolyzers and Fuel Cells
Submission Deadline: March 15, 2021
This JMR Focus Issue will review the state of the art and accelerate fundamental understandings of nanostructured materials used in alkaline fuel cells (hydrogen or alcohols as fuels) and electrolyzers, rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. Contributions are solicited on experimental and theoretical studies of novel nanostructured materials for such electrochemical devices.
