We report a case of a 31-year-old woman with ageusia. Her ageusia was related to a variety of causes including an unbalanced diet, administration of the anti-epileptic drug, carbamazepine and psychological factors. Her taste function recovered after stopping the carbamazepine and treatment with liver extracts and zinc sulphate.

We present a case of severe acute pancreatitis in a 14-year-old boy that may have been caused by hyperparathyroidism. The clue to finding the parathyroid adenoma was the hypercalcaemia. Although the patient did have acute pancreatitis, no therapy had been effective until the discovery of the parathyroid adenoma. After the excision of the parathyroid adenoma, the function of the pancreas and serum calcium returned to normal. This result suggests a certain cause and effect relationship between hyperparathyroidism and acute pancreatitis.

We have employed helical computed tomography (CT) to evaluate ear, nose and throat diseases, and present herein seven typical cases: middle ear surgery, osteoma of the external ear canal, maxillary fracture, tripod fracture, submandibular gland calculus, epiglottic abscess and vocal fold palsy. Helical (CT) facilitates the assessment of these diseases and its high diagnostic value is described.

We report a silver tattoo of the nasal mucosa that occurred after silver nitrate cautery for nasal bleeding. Ths type of tattoo is a very rare potential mimic of melanoma and appears not to have been described before. It has similar features to an amalgam tattoo of the oral mucosa on histology and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX).

The histopathological finding of heterotopias or choristoma is rare. This paper describes two patients who presented with chronic recurrent tonsillitis and underwent tonsillectomy. Histological examination revealed heterotopic cartilage in the tonsil of one patient and bone in that otthe other.

A case of giant amyloidoma in the left tonsil with extensive osseous metaplasia and a scanty and patchy monoclonal population of IgG Kappa plasma cells, is presented.

Localized tumoral amyloidosis is a rare, benign tumour of the upper aerodigestive tract. Organ-limited amyloidosis has been shown to be confined to various systems but, since the lesion was first described, only four cases situated in the tonsils have been reported in the English literature, and none of these had either osseous metaplasia or a monoclonal population of IgG Kappaplasma cells.
