1. Raillietina cesticillus, Amoebotaenia cuneata and Harmostomum commutatum are recorded from Perdix perdix for the first time.

2. Some remarks are made on the factors influencing infestation with T. tennis, Choanotaenia infundibulum and Hymenolepis phasianina in the partridge and Hymenolepis microps and Davainea urogalli in the grouse.

In a collection of nematodes received from the Institute of Plant Diseases, Buitenzorg, Java, there were three tubes containing eelworms from pepper gardens on the island of Bangka, Dutch East Indies, where disease of black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) caused by the “burrowing” nematode, Anguillulina similis, is particularly severe. In one of these tubes were worms which had been collected by Dr. J. van der Vecht from diseased pepper roots grown in a garden at Mabat Oerit, Bangka. Among these were large numbers of Anguillulina similis, many Cephalobus striatus, one Aphelenchus avenae, a few Dorylaimus sp. and 30 representatives of the worm which forms the subject of this note. On being cleared and mounted in glycerine it was seen that the buccal spear in all cases was extraordinarily long and closely resembled that figured by Cobb (1913) in Xiphinema americanum from which it was concluded that the worms might possibly belong to the genus Xiphinema. A question which exercised the writer for some time was whether, following Micoletzky (1921), the genus Xiphinema Cobb, 1913 should be considered as synonymous with Tylencholaimus de Man, 1876.

During the examination of a large number of nematodes collected by the writer in 1931 from the duodenum of a male eland (Taurotragus oryx) shot in the Nega Nega Hills, north-east of Mazabuka, three (two males and one female) specimens of a rather small species of Trichostrongylid were recovered. As the species could not be assigned to any of the known genera of bursate nematodes the new genus Minutostrongylus is founded for the reception of this species which is named Minutostrongylus taurotragi g. et sp. n.

The list of recorded hosts of A. dipsaci given by Goodey (1929 and 1933) includes rhubarb, and records and observations in Yorkshire show that infestation by this eelworm is widespread in the rhubarb-growing districts of the county. It is important, at the outset, to note that as far as the writer's observations are concerned the eelworm invariably occurs in rhubarb plants suffering from a disease well-known among growers as Rhubarb Disease or Crown Rot. The following account must therefore include recurring references to this disease with which the eelworm appears to have an intimate association. The earliest records with regard to the disease appeared in the Journal of the Northern Horticultural Society but as this Society has been discontinued a brief summary of these records is given. In the February 1913 issue of this Journal, Hector and Taylor (1913) summarised various notes on the disease. They referred to an editorial in “The Fruit Grower” (9th January, 1913) concerning examination of diseased rhubarb roots received from Yorkshire in 1909 and again in 1913.

An account is given of the incidence of the abomasal parasites in the lambs of South-West Britain. Some 600 lambs were examined, and counts of the parasites were conducted in 100 cases.

It is suggested that to explain the constancy of infection with Ostertagia, and the great difference between these “healthy figures” and the pathogenic figures (10,000) of other authors, it is necessary to assume a resistance to the accumulation of the parasite present within the sheep.

For many years it has been recognised that the nematode, Anguillulina dipsaci, is a major pest of narcissus, and growers and scientific workers alike are familiar with the presence of damaged and discoloured tissues within the bulbs, accompanied by swelling and distortion of the foliage, which are, prior to the death of the bulb, associated with attack by this pest. Certain other nematodes are sometimes responsible for somewhat similar injury to the bulbs, and in 1932 Steiner & Buhrer published a short account of those nematodes which have, on occasion, been found within and apparently been responsible for the diseased condition of narcissus bulbs in U.S.A.

There is a definitely significant correlation between the worm-burden and the live-weight increase of grazing sheep.

1. Salting of pasture was explored as a means of controlling stomach worm infestation of grazing sheep.

2. Infestation with Haemonchus contortus was significantly decreased, but that with Ostertagia spp. and Trichostrongylus axei was not significantly affected.

The identity and status of the nematode described by van Breda de Haan (1902) from the roots of diseased rice plants in the Dutch East Indies under the name of Tylenchus oryzae have remained more or less conjectural owing to the inadequacy of the original description and the absence of any drawings showing its appearance and structure. The present writer was so doubtful of its validity as a species that in his monograph on the genus Anguillulina (1932) he listed it under “species inquirendae.” In April 1934, Dr. J. van der Vecht of the Institute of Plant Diseases, Buitenzorg, Java, visited this Institute and in the course of conversation informed the writer that in his opinion the species was a valid and distinct one. He kindly promised that on his return to Buitenzorg he would collect specimens of the parasite and forward them for examination. In due course a good number of adult specimens, preserved in 5% formalin, were received and on these it has been possible to base the observations embodied in the following pages. The writer desires to express his thanks to Dr. P. van der Goot, Director of the Institute of Plant Diseases, Buitenzorg and to Dr. van der Vecht for their kindness in making this interesting material available for investigation.

During the study of the telamon of various species of Cooperias collected from domesticated and wild ruminants in South Africa and from domesticated ruminants in Great Britain, it was observed that Cooperia serrata Mönnig, 1931 had no telamon and that it also differed from the other members of the genus in other respects.

1. Presence of Molineus patens in England is recorded for the first time.

2. A more complete description is given of the morphology of M. patens including details of the spicules of the male and of some interesting papillae in the female tail.

3. The species of the genus Molineus are reviewed and compared and the suggestion is made that M. americanus is a synonym of M. patens.
