A finite-element method solution of the continuity equation is used to investigate complex features of the Younger Dryas period. By comparing results of the model with field evidence, we conclude that the climatic event responsible for the Younger Dryas stillstand was probably short (less than 500 years). The assumption of a general sliding condition for elevations below 100 m, with an enhanced sliding zone through the center of the Baltic and Gulf of Bothnia, yields broad agreement for marginal positions in Sweden and Finland during a simulated termination. A stillstand near the Younger Dryas moraine position is attained with a climatic equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) depression of 600 m for a time period of 500 years. Agreement of simulated behavior with observed behavior is less consistent in the more maritime western Sweden and western Norway.

The highest, nearly stationary crevasse that occurs on most alpine glaciers is commonly called a bergschrund. It has often been believed to form when the main ice body below slides downward and thus separates from the thin, steep ice above, which is supposed to remain frozen to its bed. In order to verify or refute this assumption, temperatures and ice motion were recorded at several points in and around a bergschrund on Daunferner, a glacier in the Stubai Alps in Tyrol, Austria. Both measurements and observations indicated that the ice above the bergschrund was sliding as well and that the crevasse formed at a place where ice thickness, deformation and sliding velocity were markedly increasing.

At the same time a randkluft, i.e. a deep crevasse between the headwall and the glacier, was observed to open, clearly the result of ice flow and not due to melting as previously believed.

Experiments have shown that tensile ductility of about 5% or more can be imparted to columnar, saline ice by pre-compressing the material by about 3.5%. This effect is similar to that observed in granular, fresh-water ice and is attributed to the operation of both dislocation creep and diffusion creep within that part of the matrix which recrystallized during the pre-compressive deformation.

Analyses of total β and γ radioactivity have been carried out on ten shallow ice cores collected in 1989 and 1990 on Kongsvegen and Sveabreen, Spitsbergen. No peak of total β radioactivity, corresponding to the Chernobyl accident (1986), can be identified. Chernobyl layers were identified by 137Cs and 134Cs activities, and a signal from the nuclear tests in Novaya Zemlya (1961–62), was detected at one location by 137Cs activity. The mean net accumulation for the periods 1986–89 and 1962–88 was estimated for both glaciers. Using topographic data, the mean net ablation on Kongsvegen was estimated for the period 1964–90 and the mean net balances were calculated. The results agree with recent direct glaciological balance measurements. For the period 1986–89, the net accumulation was higher on Sveabreen than on Kongsvegen, and the equilibrium-line altitudes (ELA) were around 450 and 520 m a.s.l., respectively. Kongsvegen had a positive balance of 0.11 m w.eq. and Sveabreen was in equilibrium, whereas for the last 26 years the balance of Kongsvegen was slightly negative (−0.10 m w.eq.) and the ELA was around 560 m a.s.l.

Single crystals and bicrystals of water ice have been adiabatically pressurized to produce, and clearly illustrate, two types of internal melt figures: (1) dendritic figures that grow from nucleation imperfections on the specimen’s surface, or from air bubbles at grain boundaries, into the ice as pressure is elevated; and (2) compression melt fractures, flat liquid-filled disks, that nucleate at imperfections in the crystal and grow with the application of pressure eventually to sprout dendritic fingers at the periphery. The transparency of the ice permitted visualization of the growth and behavior of the figures, and this could be an important tool in understanding the role of phase transformations in deep-focus earthquakes. Correlation between figure size and pressure is noted for the first time.

A model for the calculation of two-dimensional temperature fields is described and applied along the central flowline of Jakobshavns Isbræ, West Greenland, and along a flowline through the adjacent ice sheet. The model calculates the velocity-depth distribution based on Glen’s flow law and subject to the condition that the calculated velocities agree with the measured surface velocity and the estimated sliding velocity. The model allows for two-dimensional conduction and advection, for deformational energy dissipation and for the development of a basal layer of temperate ice. The results of modeling are compared to the englacial temperatures measured in boreholes reaching a depth of 1550 m which corresponds to 60% of the total depth at the center line. While there is a good agreement of the measured and modeled minimum temperatures, the shape of the temperature—depth profiles is quite different. We attribute this difference in shape to a characteristic three-dimensional ice deformation taking place in the convergent sub-surface channel of the actual ice stream. The model does not account for this three-dimensional effect. Adjustment of the modeled central temperature profile, so that its shape matches that of the measured profile, leads to an increase of thickness of the temperate basal layer by about 30%. Hence, the predicted temperate basal layer in the ice stream is likely to be about 300 m thick while the two-dimensional model suggests about 230 m. Such a thickening of the temperate basal layer by three-dimensional ice deformation may be an important mechanism of fast ice-stream flow.

Structural analyses of ice collected from the bare ice surface in the region of the Sør-Rondane Mountains were carried out. Crystal-orientation fabrics and the disposition of surface cracks were investigated to determine the stress/strain configuration in the ice sheet near the mountains. Single-maximum fabric patterns with the axis of the maximum roughly perpendicular to the flow line on the horizontal plane were observed. It was deduced from the observations that the ice exhibits a fabric pattern indicating that the ice sheet is subjected to vertical shear strain between the ice flow and the nunataks.

New strain data relating to flexural oscillations of the Erebus Glacier Tongue (EGT), McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, are presented and are analysed in the frequency domain. The data were collected during November 1989, just 3 months prior to the most recent calving of the ice tongue which occurred in March 1990. A broad-band oscillation centred on 50 s is found in both the strain measurements collected on the EGT and those collected on the sea ice nearby. The oscillation is shown, at least in part, to be propagating with a phase velocity of approximately 65 ms−1 in a direction away from the snout towards the grounding line, rather than being wholly due to a standing-wave pattern in the EGT. A coupling model between the sea ice and the EGT is proposed and is shown to compare reasonably well with the data.

A hybrid analytical and random-walk model has been developed to predict the shape of ice accreted on a horizontal cylindrical insulator due to freezing rain. The freezing rain occurs with the temperature of the vertically falling raindrops above the freezing point and the air temperature below freezing. The analytical model calculates the angular distribution of the water-film temperature and the location where freezing begins. The random-walk model predicts the accretion shape. The two random-walk model parameters, the freezing probability and the shedding parameter, are expressed as functions of the atmospheric conditions. The model predicts a variety of realistic accretion shapes from cylindrical to icicle-like. Model verification based on comparisons with other models and with experimental results demonstrates quantitatively and qualitatively the credibility of this new modelling approach.

The texture and physical properties of an ice core, recovered to 215 m depth from the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica, have been studied with regard to formation and transformation of the ice. At a depth of 152.8 m, a sharp discontinuity marks the transition between meteoric ice accumulated from above and marine ice accreted from below, as testified by electrolytical conductivity and stable-isotope measurements as well as geophysical field surveys. Automated image analysis of thin sections indicates that the decrease in grain-boundary density and the increase in grain cross-sectional area with depth is commensurate with though not necessarily caused by thermodynamically driven grain growth down to 120 m depth, corresponding to a vertical strain of roughly 65% as computed with a simple temperature-history, particle-path model. The observed increase of grain-boundary density (i.e. a decrease of grain-size) with age in the marine ice is in part explained by the thermal history of this layer. Sediment inclusions at the top of the marine-ice layer affect the observed grain-boundary density profile by inhibiting grain growth and dynamic recrystallization. This may allow some conclusions on the role of temperature, particulate inclusions, stress and strain rate in controlling the grain-size evolution of deforming ice, supplementing earlier laboratory experiments conducted at much shorter time-scales. Salinities (0.026%), brine volumes (0.09–0.2%) and solid-salt concentrations have been computed from electrolytical conductivity measurements (mean of 51.0 × 10−6 S cm−1) for the marine ice. An assessment of salt incorporation and desalination rates shows that these low salinities can at present only be explained by a unique densification mechanism of under-water ice crystals at the base of the ice shelf.

Tracer experiments, and water-level observations made while drilling 47 boreholes in an overdeepened section of Storglaciären, have demonstrated that nearly all of the water passing through this part of the glacier moves in englacial conduits. Much of the viscous energy dissipated by subglacial water flowing up an adverse bed slope out of such an overdeepening may be needed to warm the water to keep it at the pressure-melting point. If the adverse slope is sufficiently steep, freezing may occur within the conduits. The possibility for enlargement of conduits by melting is thus limited and water pressures become high. We infer that this, combined with possible blocking of conduits by freezing, forces the water to seek englacial pathways.

The frequency with which englacial conduits are encountered during drilling suggests that there are several hundred of them in any given cross-section of the glacier. Consequently, each must carry a small fraction of the total discharge, say ∼ 10−3 m3 s−1. Tracer experiments suggest that flow rates in these conduits are < 10− m s−1, so conduit cross-sectional areas must be ∼10−2 m2, a size that is consistent with video observations in boreholes. The observed mean hydraulic gradient through the overdeepening is ∼0.04. If the conduits were of uniform cross-sectional area, the roughness implied by these figures would be unreasonably high and water pressures in them would be lower than observed. Thus, we hypothesize that conduits are locally constricted to only a small fraction of their average cross-sectional area.

During the Swedish Antarctic Expedition to Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, 1988–89 the net accumulation was estimated for an area from the coast to about 400 km inland. Stake measurements were used to obtain the spatial variability and firn cores were used for the temporal variability. The mean annual accumulation for the period 1976–88 is about 0.4mw.e. for Riiser-Larsenisen and about 0.3mw.e. for the area above the grounding line. The accumulation rate at higher altitudes, > 2500 m a.s.1., is about 0.1 m w.e. for 1955–88. One record from the ice shelf covers the period 1957–88, and suggests an increase in accumulation of about 12%. Between 1976 and 1988, the accumulation has decreased by about 50%, most likely due to lower temperatures as suggested by the temperature record from Halley.

Sliding at the base of Trapridge Glacier, Yukon Territory, Canada, was measured using a “drag spool”. We describe this simple and inexpensive instrument as well as its installation and operation. From 1990 to 1992 seven sites were instrumented with drag spools. At six of the sites basal sliding, during the period of observation, accounted for 50-70% of the total flow observed at the glacier surface. The contribution from ice creep is known to be small, so most of the remaining surface motion must be attributed to subglacial sediment deformation. For the seventh site the observed sliding rate was ~ 90% of the total flow, an indication that the sliding contribution varies spatially across the bed. Diurnal variations in the response of one of our instruments appear to be correlated to subglacial water-pressure fluctuations and are interpreted in terms of changes in sliding velocity rather than the opening and closing of basal cavities.

The aim of the present research is to evaluate changes in the glacierized area, glacier-water resources and glacial run-off during the last 25–30 years. The prevailing process of degradation has resulted in a 16% diminution of the glacierized area in Gissaro-Alai and 11% in the Pamirs. The ratio between the advancing, stationary and retreating glaciers in the Gissaro-Alai mountains is 1:5:17, and the one in the Pamirs is 1:1:4. Moraine-covering of the glaciers has increased from 8 to 11 % in the Gissaro-Alai and from 6 to 11 % in the Pamirs. Ice-volume diminution of glaciers in the Gissaro-Alai is 17% and in the Pamirs it is 12%. The mean long-term annual volume of total glacial melting, glacial run-off and variation coefficients of these values in the river basins of the Pamirs and the Gissaro-Alai are described as functions of the altitudes of glacier termini, equilibrium lines and a new parameter, which characterizes the influence of the glacierized area distribution according to altitude on run-off. The data presented here indicate changes in mean annual volumes of glacier water yield in the river basins of the Pamirs and the Gissaro-Alai mountains, related to glaciation evolution in 1957–80.

This paper presents an original method for sampling special ice types like debris-rich ice or brittle ice that cannot be prepared using the standard band-saw/microtome procedure. The general working principles of the diamond wire-sawing technique are explained, and special adaptations for ice-cutting, thick-sectioning and thin-sectioning are discussed.

To determine the factors controlling natural levels of thermoluminescence (NTL) of fluvioglacially transported suspended sediment, samples were taken at hourly intervals from a meltwater stream emanating from Sólheimajökull in southern Iceland. The NTL of the samples were measured and compared with fluctuations in suspended-sediment load and in flow depth of the stream. It was found that the ratio of the 325°C and the 375°C regions of the NTL spectrum was more closely related to sediment load and flow depth than were the individual regions themselves. Analysis of the patterns suggests that NTL fluctuations are related to changes over time in the sources of sediment entrained by the stream. It is inferred that these changes relate to diurnal temperature cycles plus precipitation events. Such fluctuations raise doubts as to the validity of bulk sampling procedures in TL dating of Quaternary fluvioglacial sediments.

Field-test equipment called FIFT (a Field Instrument for Fracture toughness Tests on ice) was used in both field and laboratory fracture-toughness tests on brackish sea ice from the Gulf of Bothnia. An experimental calibration was performed and a compliance expression was then derived for the Short Rod Chevron Notched (SRCN) specimen. Using the SRCN configuration, for which the initial crack growth is shown to be stable, and measured load-point displacements, preliminary crack-growth velocities are found. The obtained estimated crack velocity is, on average, ȧe = 20 ms−1, albeit with a large standard deviation. The results indicate that critical crack (crack-jumping) growth occurs. The apparent fracture toughness, KQ, was found to have a pronounced dependency on porosity in the form of brine volume. The results obtained are derived from a linearly elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) theory. Consequently, the tests were designed to satisfy small-scale yielding requirements in terms of notch sensitivity and brittleness. The linearity of the load vs crack-opening displacement curves together with a size-effect study, showing that the specimen is notch-sensitive for grain-sizes ranging from 1.6 to nearly 100 mm, indicate that LEFM could be applicable.

A finite-element solution of the time-dependent mass-continuity equation for column-averaged ice-sheet flow and sliding is applied to the Antarctic ice sheet. First, a calibration of the model to the steady-state present ice-sheet configuration is presented. With fitted values of the parameters describing the regions of sliding, the degree of bed coupling and the ice hardness, a change in the mean annual sea-level temperature is used to simulate variation of the climatic conditions over Antarctica for both warming and cooling of the climate. Paradoxically, a climate warming of up to 9 deg leads to an increase in ice volume, while cooling leads to decreasing ice volume as long as the present margins of Antarctica are maintained. Some extreme simulations of the Antarctic ice sheet for “maximum over-riding” and “minimum warm climate” are shown for situations where the present bed conditions are altered. Finally, a time-dependent simulation shows the response of the ice-sheet system to cyclical variations in the simulated climate, demonstrating the lag of the ice-sheet response to be approximately 2700 years.
