Observations of pulsating flow conditions in a supraglacier meltwater channel on Harlech Gletscher, East Greenland, are reported. Waves of water with turbulent wave fronts and smooth recessive limbs were observed passing downstream at regular intervals of 6-7 s. Peak channel discharge was estimated at 0.5-1.0 m3 s−1, in between which discharge was zero. It is suggested that the phenomenon as observed was due to the formation of roll waves in response to channel morphology and prevalent discharge conditions. Measurements of channel morphology are given together with calculations of critical flow conditions, supporting the hypothesis of roll waves in a natural ice channel. A brief introduction to roll waves and the theory regarding their formation is included.

We describe a new laser-light-scattering instrument for measuring variations in dust concentration along polar ice cores. We have used this instrument with considerable success on the GISP2 ice core from central Greenland. Reproducibility is excellent and the required ice-sample size is relatively small. When combined with visual stratigraphy and ECM, the distinct annual spring/ summer dust peaks we observe can be used to date the core with tree-ring-like precision.

Boreholes were drilled in South Cascade Glacier to investigate the hydraulics of subglacial water flow. Results indicate that subglacial water pressures are generally close to local ice-overburden pressures and that a subglacial debris layer probably exists. Calculations indicate that the range of hydraulic conductivity of this layer is 10−7-10−4m−1. The borehole water levels generally increased during the ablation season and may be caused by a seasonal evolution in the permeability of the debris layer. Water in the debris layer drains to a subglacial conduit, the existence of which is inferred by large diurnal variations in the water level of one borehole. These levels commonly reached the bottom of the glacier, indicating near-atmospheric pressures in the conduit.

Microscopic observation of air-hydrate crystals was carried out using 34 deep ice-core samples retrieved at Vostok Station, Antarctica. Samples were obtained from depths between 1050 and 2542 m, which correspond to Wisconsin/Sangamon/Illinoian ice. It was found that the volume and number of air-hydrate varied with the climatic changes. The volume concentration of air-hydrate in the interglacial ice was about 30% larger than that in the glacial ice. In the interglacial ice, the number concentration of air-hydrate was about a half and the mean volume of air-hydrate was nearly three times larger than that in the glacial-age ice. The air-hydrate crystals were found to grow in the ice sheet, about 6.7 × 10−12 cm3 year-1, in compensation for the disappearance of smaller ones. The volume concentration of air-hydrate was related to the total gas content by a geometrical equation with a proportional parameter α. The mean value of α below 1250 m, where no air bubbles were found, was about 0.79. This coincided with an experimentally determined value of the crystalline site occupancy of the air-hydrate in a 1500 m core obtained at Dye 3, Greenland (Hondoh and others, 1990). In the depth profile of calculated α for many samples, α in the interglacial ice was about 30% smaller than that in the glacial-age ice.

To study the dynamics of ice sheets and glaciers, velocities at the bed of a glacier must be measured directly or calculated using data gathered from boreholes and surface surveys. Boreholes to the bed are expensive and time-consuming to drill, so the determination of basal velocity is almost exclusively by numerical inversion of velocities observed at the surface. For non-linearly viscous glaciers, a perturbation analysis demonstrates that inversions for englacial velocities will magnify measurement errors at an exponential rate with depth. The rate at which calculation errors grow is proportional to a Lyapunov exponent, a measure of “information loss” which is shown to be a simple linear function of spatial frequency with a coefficient depending on Glen’s flow-law exponent, n. The coefficient decreases with increasing non-linearity, demonstrating that inversions with non-linearly viscous ice have smaller calculation errors than inversions with linearly viscous ice. In both the linear and nonlinear cases, the Lyapunov exponent (and rate of error growth) increases with decreasing wavelength, which limits velocity calculations at the bed to wavelengths on the order of one ice thickness or greater. This limitation is theoretical and cannot be countered by more accurate survey data or special numerical techniques.

Global fall-out from atmospheric testing of thermonuclear weapons produced horizon markers corresponding to the initiation of testing in 1953 and the maximum fall-out in 1963. The radioactive isotope 137Cs associated with these events has a half-life of 30.2 years. Therefore, with the appropriate radiation detectors, this fall-out can be used as a long-term temporal indicator in glaciers and snowpack. A prototype γ-ray detector system was successfully tested and was used to make in-situ measurements of the 137Cs marker in a borehole at Summit, Greenland. The system consisted of a 7.6 cm by 7.6 cm NaI(Tl) scintillation crystal/photomultiplier detector, commercial pre-amplifier, amplifier and power supplies, and a microcomputer-based pulse-height analyzer. The measurements were made in boreholes of 25.4 cm and 12.7 cm diameter to depths of 22 m. Based on the results reported here, the γ-ray detection technique promises to be a powerful way to locate quickly horizon markers in the field.

An experimental investigation into the mechanical behaviour of polycrystalline ice in triaxial compression has been conducted using conditions generally favourable to brittle fracture and microcracking. Under triaxial stresses at high strain rate, ice failure occurs by abrupt shear fracturing, generally inclined at about 45° to the maximum principal stress. At −20°C, such failure is suppressed by the imposition of a small confining pressure, allowing a transition to ductile-type flow accompanied by distributed microcracking, but at —40°C shear fracture persists under confinement of up to at least 50 MPa. For low confining pressures (< 10 MPa), brittle strength is strongly pressure-dependent; above this it is pressure-independent. Evidence is presented that suggests this may reflect a change from a fracture process influenced by friction to fracture initiated by localized yielding. Ductile yield strength is found to be little influenced by confining pressure despite the inhibition of cracking that leads to greatly contrasting observed crack densities. Flow conforms to the well-known power law for ice with Q = 69 J mol−1 and n = 4.2 over the temperature range −20° to −4-5° C Under these conditions, microcracking in ice appears to remain remarkably stable and non-interacting.

A remotely sensed method of assessing radiative-transfer processes which considers distinctive zones in the mountain-glacier drainage basin, increases the potential for comprehensive radiative-exchange analysis. By investigating terrain-reflected and terrain-emitted radiation using Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper images and digital elevation data, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the importance of local exchange in the computation of net shortwave and longwave radiation. The results show that terrain-reflected radiation estimates are required to calculate the total shortwave spectral irradiance in all parts of the basin This is necessary to compute accurate surface-cover reflectance and albedo values from the satellite imagery. Furthermore, the assessment of the terrain-emitted radiation explains why, especially on a clear day, the snow and ice covers in many parts of the basin have a very small longwave radiation deficit.

The traditional method of calculating glacier outflows by measuring velocities and areas is difficult, inaccurate and sometimes dangerous in fast mountain streams. The salt-dilution method offers a more accurate alternative but, until now, its use has been restricted because of the difficulty of mixing chemical solutions and measuring chemical concentrations in the field. A computer program has been written which uses a laptop microcomputer to control measurements of stream conductivity and which quickly computes the stream flow directly in the field. The development of this method is described and examples are presented of the application of the method for glaciers in the Rocky Mountains and the Coast Mountains of Canada.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the growth rate of an icicle were carried out as a function of temperature, water-supply rate and wind speed; the relative humidity was also taken into account. The length of an icicle increases by the downward growth of thin dendritic crystals into the supercooled pendant water drop at the tip, and thus the growth is in the crystallographic a-axis direction. The diameter, on the other hand, increases by the freezing of a water film flowing down along the icicle wall. The ratio of measured length-and diameter-growth rates was large, namely 8–32.

Both growth rates increased with decreasing temperature and increasing wind speed. The increase in water-supply rate led to the decrease in the length-growth rate but no significant change in the diameter-growth rate. These results could be well described by a numerical model of icicle growth which takes account of the dendritic growth at the tip and the wall and the effective heat transfer within the turbulent boundary layer around the icicle. A formation mechanism of ribs and hollows is discussed in relation to the flowing and freezing process of water on an icicle wall.

Mechanical conditions at the base of Trapridge Glacier, Yukon Territory, were investigated using a “ploughmeter”. We describe the physical characteristics and the theory of this new instrument as well as its operation. Observational results reveal variations in ploughmeter response that might be attributed to spatial variability in subglacial processes or spatial variation in sediment granulometry. Quantitative analysis of the interaction of the ploughmeter with the basal layer yields estimates of rheological parameters. If the sediment is assumed to behave as a Newtonian viscous fluid, the estimated effective viscosity is 3.0 × 109 −3.1 × 1010Pas; if it is assumed to behave as an ideal plastic solid, the estimated yield strength is 48–57 kPa. In both cases, the estimated shear resistance of subglacial material is comparable to but somewhat less than that required to balance fully the applied basal shear stress.

A transverse profile of velocity was measured across Ice Stream B, West Antarctica, in order to determine the role of the margins in the force balance of an active ice stream. The profile extended from near the ice-stream center line, through a marginal shear zone and on to the slow-moving ice sheet. The velocity profile exhibits a high degree of shear deformation within a marginal zone, where intense, chaotic crevassing occurs. Detailed analysis of the profile, using analytical and numerical models of ice flow, leads to the following conclusions regarding the roles of the bed and the margins in ice-stream dynamics:

• (i) The overall resistive drag on the ice stream is partitioned nearly equally between the margins and the bed and, thus, both are important in the force balance of the ice stream.

• (ii) The ice within the chaotic zone must be about 10 times softer than the ice in the central part of the ice stream.

• (iii) The average basal shear stress is 0.06 × 105 Pa. This implies that the entire bed cannot be blanketed by the weak, deformable till observed by Engelhardt and others (1990) near the center of the ice stream — there must be regions of increased basal drag.

• (iv) High strain rates and shear stresses in the marginal zones indicate that strain heating in the margins may be significant.

While the exact quantitative values leading to these conclusions are somewhat model and location-dependent, the overall conclusions are robust. As such, they are likely to have importance for ice-stream dynamics in general.

The basal ice layer of surge-type Variegated Glacier, Alaska, appears to have formed by a combination of (i) open-system freezing of subglacial meltwaters over both rigid and unconsolidated substrates; (ii) apron over-riding during surge-induced glacier advance; (iii) incorporation of glacier ice by recumbent folding, thrust-faulting and nappe over-riding during down-glacier propagation of a surge front; and (iv) post-formational metamorphism involving recrystallization, partial internal melting and squeezing out of meltwaters and dissolved gases. Structural evidence and the characteristics of debris entrained in ice facies formed by basal freezing suggest that the layer includes a lower element formed under surge conditions and an upper element formed during the quiescent phase of a surge cycle. The lower element is depleted in comminution products and enriched in medium gravel, while the upper element contains comminution products but virtually no medium gravel. This distinction is attributed to the efficiency of bedrock fracture and meltwater flushing of comminution products under surge conditions. The basal ice layer thickens from <1 m to >13 m down-glacier in a manner consistent with the magnitude of horizontal shortening induced by the 1982–83 surge. Thickening is largely tectonic in origin, and the style and intensity of folding and thrust faulting change down-glacier as the magnitude of horizontal shortening increases. Tectonic processes associated with the down-glacier propagation of surge fronts therefore appear to be capable of creating thick basal ice layers which allow extensive supraglacial sedimentation of subglacially derived debris.

Outlet streams of Variegated Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., were observed before, during and after the surge of 1982–83. Measurements of discharge, suspended sediment and dissolved load in the outlet streams are presented for the years 1982–84, and comparisons are made with data from previous years. The data are interpreted to yield characteristics of the basal hydraulic system. The surging region of the glacier was underlain by a basal hydraulic zone of low water velocity and high water storage, inferred to be a distributed-flow system. The ice down-glacier of the propagating surge front was underlain by a high-velocity, low-storage zone, inferred to be a conduit system. The volume of water stored above the surge front was the major hydraulic control on the surge. Basal bedrock erosion during the surge was extreme in comparison to non-surging glaciers. The sediment output was directly proportional to the basal sliding, with a dimensionless erosion rate (meters eroded from the bed divided by meters of sliding) of order 1.0 × 10−4. Total erosion during the 20 year surge cycle was on the order of 0.3 m of bedrock, with approximately two-thirds occurring during the 2 years of the surge peak, and the bulk of this during the peak 2 months.

This paper presents the distribution of average δD andδ18O values for the top 1 m of surface snow for a large area of Antarctica. The samples were collected on the 1990 International Trans-Antarctica Expedition which crossed the continent from the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula to Mirny Station. The empirical relationships between the isotopes, temperature and elevation are computed. The slopes of δD with respect to the surface temperature for the segments west (Patriot Hills-Vostok) and east of Vostok (Komsomolskaya-Mirny) are not significantly different to that observed between Dumont d’Urville and Dome C (Lorius and Merlivat, 1977) which are often used to interpret deep ice-core isotopic profiles. There is, however, a noticeable shift between the two regression lines with, for a given temperature, higher isotopic values west of Vostok. The deuterium excess values increase sharply at 3000 m.a.s.l. on the plateau, confirming the results of Petit and others (1991).

We calibrate the δ18O paleothermometer for central Greenland using borehole temperatures, a thermal model forced by a measured δ18O record and a formal inverse technique. The calibration is determined mostly by temperature fluctuations of the last several centuries, including the Little Ice Age. Results are generally insensitive to model variables, including initial condition, basal boundary condition, parameterization of snow thermal properties, ice thickness and likely errors in temperature and isotope measurements. Results of this borehole calibration also seem to be in agreement with modern spatial gradients of δ18O and temperature. We suggest that calibrations of isotopic paleothermometers using borehole temperatures are a useful paleoclimate tool, because they are independent of spatial gradients and include the effects of prehistoric temperatures over ice sheets.

A stainless-steel platen, with a centrally located pressure sensor on the front face, has been used to crush mono-crystalline, bubble-free fresh-water ice samples. Two electrical conductors, located on the face of the pressure sensor, were connected to a bridge circuit so that the presence of liquid between the two conductors could be detected and its thickness measured. Video records of the ice/ steel contact zone during crushing were obtained by mounting samples on a thick Plexiglas plate which permitted viewing through the specimen to the ice/steel interface. Total load and pressure records exhibited a sawtooth pattern due to the compliance of the ice and the testing apparatus, and spalling of ice from the contact zone. When the region of contact was in the vicinity of the pressure transducer, liquid was detected and peaks occurred in the liquid sensor output when load drops occurred. Contact between the platen and the ice consisted of low pressure zones of highly damaged crushed and/or refrozen ice, opaque in appearance, and transparent, high-pressure regions of relatively undamaged ice. Upper limits for the liquid-layer thickness on the high-pressure undamaged ice were ~3 µm on the ascending sides of the sawteeth in the load records and ~ 21 µ on the sharp descending sides.

A numerical avalanche-prediction scheme was developed for highway applications at Kootenay Pass, British Columbia. The model features parametric discriminant analysis using Bayesian statistics to predict avalanche occurrences. Cluster techniques are then employed in discriminant space to analyze avalanche occurrences by the method of nearest neighbours. Extensive numerical testing of the model using an historical data base indicates that prediction accuracy may be 70% or better for both avalanche and non-avalanche time intervals.

The tectonic effects of a glacier surge differ from those of steady state because flow is driven by longitudinal stresses rather than shear stresses. The orientations of recently formed crevasses, indicating the directions of the principal stresses, have been used to investigate tectonic processes in glacier surges recorded by repeat aerial photography. Long-term, large-magnitude shifts in stress regime are demonstrated, as are short-term propagation features. Two types of tide-water glacier advance are identified, depending on the position of the surge front relative to a low effective-pressure zone at the glacier terminus.

A finite-element method solution of the continuity equation is used to investigate complex features of the Younger Dryas period. By comparing results of the model with field evidence, we conclude that the climatic event responsible for the Younger Dryas stillstand was probably short (less than 500 years). The assumption of a general sliding condition for elevations below 100 m, with an enhanced sliding zone through the center of the Baltic and Gulf of Bothnia, yields broad agreement for marginal positions in Sweden and Finland during a simulated termination. A stillstand near the Younger Dryas moraine position is attained with a climatic equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) depression of 600 m for a time period of 500 years. Agreement of simulated behavior with observed behavior is less consistent in the more maritime western Sweden and western Norway.
