Franz Josef and Other Glaciers of the Southern Alps, New Zealand

Abstract

Published literature on the glaciers of the Southern Alps, New Zealand, and the Franz Josef Glacier in particular, is reviewed under the headings of (1) rates of movement, and (2) evidences of advance and retreat. Comparison of available rainfall statistics with the dates of advance and retreat of this glacier suggests that advances are due to periods of high precipitation, and retreats to periods of low precipitation, the effects being seen at the terminal face about five years after such periods began.

Zusammenfassung

Die über die Gletscher der Southern Alps, Neuseeland, und insbesondere über den Franz Josef Glacier veröffentlichte Literatur wird unter den folgenden Ueberschriften besprochen: 1) Bewegungsgeschwindigkeit, und 2) Beweise für Vorstoss und Rückzug. Wenn man vorhandene Statistiken über Regenfälle mit den Daten des Vorstosses und Rückzugs dieses Gletschers vergleicht, so lässt sich vermuten, dass Vorstösse auf Perioden schweren Niederschlags zurückzuführen sind und Rückzüge auf Perioden geringen Niederschlags. Die Folgen sind etwa 5 Jahre nach Beginn solcher Perioden am Gletscherende zu sehen.
