Response of fluid-drilled ‘Grand Rapids’ lettuce seeds to high temperature and low moisture

It is estimated that only 35–50% of the potential yield of field lettuce crops is harvested (Gray, 1978c). A major contributory factor is the failure to establish full, uniform plant stands. Erratic lettuce emergence has been attributed to inadequate soil moisture, soil crusting, and high (> 25 °C) soil temperature (Hemphill, 1982).
