Earlier information on the status of investment treaties appeared at 21 I.L.M. 1208 (1982), 30 I.L.M. 252 (1991), 31 I.L.M. 491 (1992) and 32 I.L.M. 929 (1993). The present updating lists all investment treaties on record which were signed or which entered into force after January 1, 1990, a total of 360 treaties. Together with investment treaties in earlier lists,this brings the total number of bilateral investment treaties (BITs) on record up to 714, of which 488 are known to be in force; in addition there are 7 multilateral investment treaties (MITs), all in force. The number of countries which are party to one or more BITs has risen to 146; a further four countries are party to a MIT. The treaty information received from Margrete Stevens and Ruvan de Alwis of ICSID is gratefully acknowledged. The symbol[*] indicates that the text of a treaty appeared in International Legal Materials. The symbol “nif”indicates that a treaty was not yet in force on the date stated.]
