Phenotypic stability of sorghum hybrids for resistance to the spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe)

Abstract

The phenotypic stability of resistance to the stemborer, Chilo partellus and grain yield in 10 newly developed sorghum hybrids namely HYD-1, HYD-2, HYD-3, HYD-4, HYD-5, HYD-6, HYD-7, HYD-8, HYD-9 and HYD-10, and two local checks, Serena (tolerant) and IS-1044 (resistant), were evaluated for seven seasons at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) Mbita Point Field Station and Ungoye Field Site in western Kenya. Two stability parameters were determined: (1) The linear regression (b1) of an entry mean on an environmental index, and (2) the deviation from regression (S2d). The significance found for the linear component of environment implies that the variation over the different environments is adequate to test for cultivar stability. Hybrids HYD-1, HYD-5, HYD-8 and HYD-10 were identified as the most suitable genotypes for future commercial production.

Résumé

La stabilité phénotypique de la resistance du foreur de tige et le rendement en grains chez 10 hybrides de sorgho nouvellement mis au point ont été évalués au cours de 7 saisons à la Station de Mbita Point et à Ungoye (ICIPE), ouest du Kenya. Il s'agit des hybrides HYD-1, HYD-2, HYD-3, HYD-4, HYD-5, HYD-6, HYD-7, HYD-8, HYD-9 et HYD-10 et 2 témoins locaux, Serena (tolérant) et IS-1044 (résistant). Deux paramètres de stabilité été déterminés: (1) la regression linéaire (b1) de la moyenne de passages sur un indice environnemental et, (2) l'écart par rapport à la regression (S2d). L'importance révélée sur la composante linéaire de l'environnement implique que la variation sur les différents environnements a été adéquate en vue de tester la stabilité des cultivars. Les hybrides HYD-5, HYD-8 et HYD-10 ont été identifiés comme les génotypes les plus appropriés pour la production commerciale.
