Antibiosis Mechanism of Resistance to Stem Borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) in Sorghum

Abstract

The biology of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) was studied on two resistant, IS 2205, IS 5469 and two susceptible, HC 136, ICSV1 sorghum genotypes. Significant differences were observed between resistant and susceptible genotypes in regards to larval mortality in whorl, larval period, larval weight, larval length, per cent pupation, pupal weight, fecundity per female and total life span of this pest. Growth index was also influenced by the resistant genotypes. It has been concluded that high mortality of larvae on resistant lines is due to antibiosis.

The correlations between the characters of the pest biology have been worked out and larval stage was the most important parameter influencing the total pest survival and population build-up in the succeeding generations.

La biologie du Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) a èté observée sur deux variètés resistantes (IS 2205, IS 5469) et deux succeptibles (HC 136, ICSV1) du sorgho. Des differences significatives furent observées entre les genotypes resistants et succeptibles en relation avec la mortalité des larves dans le verticille, la periode du developpement, le poids et la longueur des larves, le pourcentage et le poids des chrysalides, la fecondité des femelles et la durée de vie des insectes. L'index de croissance a èté influencé par les genotypes resistants. II a èté conclu que la mortalité elevée des larves sur les souches resistantes est due a l'antibiose. Les correlation entre les charactères de la biologie des insectes ont èté analysés et le stage larvaire fut le plus important parametre qui a influencé la survie des insectes et l'edification des futures generations.
