Call for Associate Editor

Role Description

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a young journal that is ready to take the next step and grow. The Associate Editors will have responsibility for managing the peer review process – assigning papers to referees and making recommendations on the content to be published in Global Mental Health; ensuring the highest scientific quality and relevance of papers published. They will also be responsible acting as an ambassador for the journal to increase its standing, and helping with commissioning papers in the initial years.

TASKS

1. Assigning papers to referees and making decision recommendations

• The nominated Associate Editor will choose which referees should review the article. Papers would be reviewed by at least two experts in the field.

• The Editorial Assistant will keep track of scheduling (timings of responses etc.) - if after reminders, a referee does not respond, the Associate Editor may be asked for alternative choices of referees. The referee responses are forwarded to the Associate Editor; the main responsibility of the Associate Editor is to make a recommendation of the decision for a paper (the Editor-in-Chief will make a final decision on the paper based on the Associate Editor recommendations).

• Working with the Editor-in-Chief to advise on queries raised by external contacts, and liaising with Cambridge University Press as appropriate. This will include potential legal or ethical issues.

2. Acting as an ambassador for the journal

• Act as an ambassador for the Journal at conferences/key events that they are already attending.

• Identify papers of sufficient importance to highlight with a press release or targeted social media promotion.

• Attend the journal’s annual editorial meeting.

3. Helping with commissioning of papers

• As part of this next step, we plan to commission a large number of papers from key contacts in the field, and would like each Associate Editor to recommend at least five contacts a year that we could approach about writing a paper.
