In this article, we investigate the properties of heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation robust (HAR) test statistics in time series regression settings when observations are missing. We primarily focus on the nonrandom missing process case where we treat the missing locations to be fixed as T → ∞ by mapping the missing and observed cutoff dates into points on [0,1] based on the proportion of time periods in the sample that occur up to those cutoff dates. We consider two models, the amplitude modulated series (Parzen, 1963) regression model, which amounts to plugging in zeros for missing observations, and the equal space regression model, which simply ignores the missing observations. When the amplitude modulated series regression model is used, the fixed-b limits of the HAR test statistics depend on the locations of missing observations but are otherwise pivotal. When the equal space regression model is used, the fixed-b limits of the HAR test statistics have the standard fixed-b limits as in Kiefer and Vogelsang (2005). We discuss methods for obtaining fixed-b critical values with a focus on bootstrap methods and find the naive i.i.d. bootstrap with missing dates fixed to be an effective and practical way to obtain the fixed-b critical values.

We propose a new iterative estimation algorithm for use in semiparametric models where calculation of Z-estimators by conventional means is difficult or impossible. Unlike a Newton–Raphson approach, which makes use of the entire Hessian, this approach only uses curvature information associated with portions of the Hessian that are relatively easy to calculate. Consistency and asymptotic normality of estimators obtained from this algorithm are established under regularity conditions and an information dominance condition. Two specific examples, a quantile regression model with missing covariates and a GARCH-in-mean model with conditional mean of unknown functional form, demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm. This new approach can be interpreted as an extension of the maximization by parts estimation approach to semiparametric models.

We develop a test, based on the Lagrange multiplier [LM] testing principle, for the value of the long memory parameter of a univariate time series that is composed of a fractionally integrated shock around a potentially broken deterministic trend. Our proposed test is constructed from data which are de-trended allowing for a trend break whose (unknown) location is estimated by a standard residual sum of squares estimator applied either to the levels or first differences of the data, depending on the value specified for the long memory parameter under the null hypothesis. We demonstrate that the resulting LM-type statistic has a standard limiting null chi-squared distribution with one degree of freedom, and attains the same asymptotic local power function as an infeasible LM test based on the true shocks. Our proposed test therefore attains the same asymptotic local optimality properties as an oracle LM test in both the trend break and no trend break environments. Moreover, this asymptotic local power function does not alter between the break and no break cases and so there is no loss in asymptotic local power from allowing for a trend break at an unknown point in the sample, even in the case where no break is present. We also report the results from a Monte Carlo study into the finite-sample behaviour of our proposed test.

This article considers the problem of inference for nested least squares averaging estimators. We study the asymptotic behavior of the Mallows model averaging estimator (MMA; Hansen, 2007) and the jackknife model averaging estimator (JMA; Hansen and Racine, 2012) under the standard asymptotics with fixed parameters setup. We find that both MMA and JMA estimators asymptotically assign zero weight to the under-fitted models, and MMA and JMA weights of just-fitted and over-fitted models are asymptotically random. Building on the asymptotic behavior of model weights, we derive the asymptotic distributions of MMA and JMA estimators and propose a simulation-based confidence interval for the least squares averaging estimator. Monte Carlo simulations show that the coverage probabilities of proposed confidence intervals achieve the nominal level.

This article develops new model selection methods for forecasting panel data using a set of least squares (LS) vector autoregressions. Model selection is based on minimizing the estimated quadratic forecast risk among candidate models. We provide conditions under which the selection criterion is asymptotically efficient in the sense of Shibata (1980) as n (cross sections) and T (time series) approach infinity. Relative to extant selection criteria, this criterion places a heavier penalty on model dimensionality in order to account for the effects of parameterized forms of cross sectional heterogeneity (such as fixed effects) on forecast loss. We also extend the analysis to bias-corrected least squares, showing that significant reductions in forecast risk can be achieved.

Noncausal autoregressive models with heavy-tailed errors generate locally explosive processes and, therefore, provide a convenient framework for modelling bubbles in economic and financial time series. We investigate the probability properties of mixed causal-noncausal autoregressive processes, assuming the errors follow a stable non-Gaussian distribution. Extending the study of the noncausal AR(1) model by Gouriéroux and Zakoian (2017), we show that the conditional distribution in direct time is lighter-tailed than the errors distribution, and we emphasize the presence of ARCH effects in a causal representation of the process. Under the assumption that the errors belong to the domain of attraction of a stable distribution, we show that a causal AR representation with non-i.i.d. errors can be consistently estimated by classical least-squares. We derive a portmanteau test to check the validity of the estimated AR representation and propose a method based on extreme residuals clustering to determine whether the AR generating process is causal, noncausal, or mixed. An empirical study on simulated and real data illustrates the potential usefulness of the results.

An estimator of a finite-dimensional parameter is said to be doubly robust (DR) if it imposes parametric specifications on two unknown nuisance functions, but only requires that one of these two specifications is correct in order for the estimator to be consistent for the object of interest. In this article, we study versions of such estimators that use local polynomial smoothing for estimating the nuisance functions. We show that such semiparametric two-step (STS) versions of DR estimators have favorable theoretical and practical properties relative to other commonly used STS estimators. We also show that these gains are not generated by the DR property alone. Instead, it needs to be combined with an orthogonality condition on the estimation residuals from the nonparametric first stage, which we show to be satisfied in a wide range of models.

In unit root testing, a piecewise locally stationary process is adopted to accommodate nonstationary errors that can have both smooth and abrupt changes in second- or higher-order properties. Under this framework, the limiting null distributions of the conventional unit root test statistics are derived and shown to contain a number of unknown parameters. To circumvent the difficulty of direct consistent estimation, we propose to use the dependent wild bootstrap to approximate the nonpivotal limiting null distributions and provide a rigorous theoretical justification for bootstrap consistency. The proposed method is compared through finite sample simulations with the recolored wild bootstrap procedure, which was developed for errors that follow a heteroscedastic linear process. Furthermore, a combination of autoregressive sieve recoloring with the dependent wild bootstrap is shown to perform well. The validity of the dependent wild bootstrap in a nonstationary setting is demonstrated for the first time, showing the possibility of extensions to other inference problems associated with locally stationary processes.

Let x be a transformation of y, whose distribution is unknown. We derive an expansion formulating the expectations of x in terms of the expectations of y. Apart from the intrinsic interest in such a fundamental relation, our results can be applied to calculating E(x) by the low-order moments of a transformation which can be chosen to give a good approximation for E(x). To do so, we generalize the approach of bounding the terms in expansions of characteristic functions, and use our result to derive an explicit and accurate bound for the remainder when a finite number of terms is taken. We illustrate one of the implications of our method by providing accurate naive bootstrap confidence intervals for the mean of any fat-tailed distribution with an infinite variance, in which case currently available bootstrap methods are asymptotically invalid or unreliable in finite samples.

We develop a new method for generating dynamics of conditional correlation matrices of asset returns. These correlation matrices are parameterized by a subset of their partial correlations, whose structure is described by a set of connected trees called “vine”. Partial correlation processes can be specified separately and arbitrarily, providing a new family of very flexible multivariate GARCH processes, called “vine-GARCH” processes. We estimate such models by quasi-maximum likelihood. We compare our models with DCC and GAS-type specifications through simulated experiments and we evaluate their empirical performances.

We show boundedness in probability uniformly in sample size of a general M-estimator for multiple linear regression in time series. The positive criterion function for the M-estimator is assumed lower semicontinuous and sufficiently large for large argument. Particular cases are the Huber-skip and quantile regression. Boundedness requires an assumption on the frequency of small regressors. We show that this is satisfied for a variety of deterministic and stochastic regressors, including stationary and random walks regressors. The results are obtained using a detailed analysis of the condition on the regressors combined with some recent martingale results.

This article develops an asymptotic theory for estimators of two parameters in the drift function in the fractional Vasicek model when a continuous record of observations is available. The fractional Vasicek model with long-range dependence is assumed to be driven by a fractional Brownian motion with the Hurst parameter greater than or equal to one half. It is shown that, when the Hurst parameter is known, the asymptotic theory for the persistence parameter depends critically on its sign, corresponding asymptotically to the stationary case, the explosive case, and the null recurrent case. In all three cases, the least squares method is considered, and strong consistency and the asymptotic distribution are obtained. When the persistence parameter is positive, the estimation method of Hu and Nualart (2010) is also considered.
