20 Editor’s note: In April goo8, the attorney general of Canada filed applications for judicial review with the Federal Court of Canada that challenged the commission’s jurisdiction to investigate the subject matter of relevant complaints (see also a backgrounder at Military Police Complaints Commission, News, “Complaints Commission ‘Surprised’ by Government Law Suit,” 14 April goo8, at <http://www.mpcc-cppm.gc.ca/400/nr-cp/goo8-04-14-1-eng.aspx>, <http://www.mpcc-cppm.gc.ca/400/nr-cp/aoo8-o4-14-1-fra.aspx>) and also moved to have the commission stay a public interest hearing in relation to the complaints. The Federal Court dismissed the motion to stay on 28 April goog on the grounds that irreparable harm would not result if the stay were not granted (Attorney General of Canada v. Amnesty International Canada et al, goog FC 426; at <http://decisions.fct-cf.gc.ca/en/2009/2009fc426/2009fc426.html>) but granted the applications for judicial review on 16 September goog, ruling that the MPCC acted beyond its jurisdiction with respect to the complaints (Attorney General of Canada v. Amnesty International Canada et al, goog FC 918; at <http://decisions.fct-cf.gc.ca/en/goog/googfcg18/googfcg18.html>).
