A REVISION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN OMALIINAE (COLEOPTERA: STAPHYLINIDAE): THE GENERA ARPEDIUM ERICHSON AND EUCNECOSUM REITTER1

Abstract

The North American species of the genera Arpedium Erichson, and Eucnecosum Reitter are revised. Five species are recognized, the holarctic species E. brachypterum (Gravenhorst), E. tenue (LeConte) and E. brunnescens (J. Sahlberg), the transcontinental boreal species A. cribratum Fauvel and the eastern United States species A. schwarzi Fauvel.

Lectotypes are designated for E. brachypterum, A. cribratum, A. angulare Fauvel (= A. cribratum), and A. schwarzi. The following new synonymy is established, Arpedium norvegicum var. sallasi Munster and Eucnecosum meybohmi Lohse (= E. tenue) and Arpedium angulare Fauvel and A. columbiense Hatch (= A. cribratum). All genera and species are described and illustrated with scanning electron photomicrographs and line drawings, four maps showing the North American distribution of each species are provided, and keys are presented to aid in the identification of all the species as well as the European species Arpedium quadrum (Gravenhorst). All available records and biological data for the species are summarized.

The use of the generic name Eucnecosum Reitter is discussed and the transfer of brachypterum, tenue, and brunnescens from Arpedium to this genus by Lohse is confirmed.

Résumé

Cette étude constitue une révision taxonomique des espèces nord-américaines des genres Arpedium Erichson et Eucnecosum Reitter. Ces genres comptent 5 espèces valides, les espèces holarctiques E. brachypterum (Gravenhorst), E. tenue (LeConte) et E. brunnescens (J. Sahlberg), une espèce boréale et transcontinentale, A. cribratum Fauvel, et une espèce de l'est des Etats-Unis, A. schwarzi Fauvel.

Un lectotype est désigné pour E. brachypterum, A. cribratum, A. angulare Fauvel (= A. cribratum) et A. schwarzi. Les nouveaux synonymes suivants sont proposés, Arpedium norvegicum var. sallasi Munster et Eucnecosum meybohmi Lohse (= E. tenue) et Arpedium angulare Fauvel (= A. cribratum). Les genres et espèces sont décrits et illustrés à l'aide de dessins et de photographies prises au microscope électronique à balayage, la répartition géographique nord-américaine de chaque espèce est illustrée à l'aide d'une carte, et des tableaux facilitent la détermination des espèces ainsi que de l'espèce européenne Arpedium quadrum (Gravenhorst). Les mentions disponibles et les données biologiques pour les espèces sont résumées.

L'utilisation du nom générique Eucnecosum Reitter est discuté et le transfert de brachypterum, tenue et brunnescens d'Arpedium à ce genre initié par Lohse est confirmé.
