LABORATORY STUDIES OF RADIATION-INDUCED STERILITY ON THE ONION MAGGOT, DELIA ANTIQUA (DIPTERA: ANTHOMYIIDAE)

Abstract

A dose of 4 krad was the most appropriate for sterilizing pupae of Delia antiqua (Meigen) for field release: adult emergence was not reduced, emerging female flies were sterile, and the eggs produced by normal females which had mated with males irradiated as pupae had a lower hatch than those resulting from matings with normal males. Males irradiated as 6- to 8-day-old pupae were fully competitive under laboratory conditions. Continuous scrutiny of laboratory cultures to detect reduction in adult emergence or reduced competitiveness of males is stressed.

La dose de 4 krad s'est avérée la plus appropriée pour stériliser des pupes de Delia antiqua pour relâchage sur le terrain : l'émergence des adultes n'était pas affectée, les femelles émergées étaient stériles, et des oeufs produits par des femelles normales qui s'étaient accouplées avec des mâles irradiés à l'état pupal, ont montré un taux d'éclosion plus bas que ceux provenant d'accouplements avec des mâles normaux. Les mâles irradiés à l'état de pupes de 6 à 8 jours se sont avérés tout-à-fait compétitifs sous des conditions de laboratoire. L'importance d'une surveillance continue des cultures de laboratoire, afin de détecter toute réduction de l'émergence des adultes ou de la compétitivité des mâles, est soulignée.
