EFFECT OF CHITIN-SYNTHESIS INHIBITORS ON OVIPOSITION BY TREATED ADULTS AND ON SUBSEQUENT EGG HATCH OF THE CODLING MOTH, CYDIA POMONELLA (LEPIDOFTERA: OLETHREUTIDAE)1

Abstract

In laboratory studies with the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), TH 6043 and TH 6044, new benzoylphenylurea chitin-synthesis inhibitors, were more effective than TH 6045 and diflubenzuron in reducing hatch of eggs from treated adults. With TH 6043 and TH 6044, egg hatch was reduced only when the female of each mating pair was treated. Topical application of diflubenzuron to adults moderately reduced egg hatch while TH 6045 had no effect. Diflubenzuron also reduced oviposition by females. None of these compounds adversely affected mortality, longevity, or mating propensity of adults.

Au cours de tests en laboratoire impliquant le carpocapse de la pomme, Cydia pomonella (L.), les nouveaux inhibiteurs de synthèse de la chitine TH 6043 et TH 6044 se sont avérés plus efficaces pour réduire l'éclosion des oeufs provenant d'adultes traités que le TH 6045 et le diflubenzuron. Avec le TH 6043 et le TH 6044, la réduction de l'éclosion des oeufs n'était effective que lorsque c'était la femelle de chaque paire qui était traitée. L'application topicale de diflubenzuron aux adultes a réduit modérément l'éclosion des oeufs alors que le TH 6045 n'a pas eu d'effet. Le diflubenzuron a également réduit la ponte chez les femelles. Aucun de ces produits n'a affecté la mortalité, la longévité ou la tendance à l'accouplement des adultes.
