La question des maladies contagieuses dans la flotte est une des plus importantes des services sanitaires de la marine. Durant ces dernières années il y a eu, dans la flotte des Etats-Unis, une augmentation graduelle des cas d'affections contagieuses, allant de 1,20% des admissions dans les hôpitaux en 1899 à 6,12% en 1908. Le point de départ semble en être dans les stations d'entraînement (Training Stations), foyers fréquents de contagion.
