AN UNPUBLISHED STIRRUP JAR FROM ATHENS AND THE 1871–2 PRIVATE EXCAVATIONS IN THE OUTER KERAMEIKOS

Abstract

This article presents an unpublished stirrup jar from the Outer Kerameikos in Athens. The recently discovered archival material in the University of Oxford associated with the purchase of the stirrup jar helps to contextualise this object, and assess its significance in the light of the 1871–2 private excavations in the Outer Kerameikos. It also provides important information regarding the organisation of the antiquities trade in late nineteenth-century Athens.

Ένας αδημοσίευτος ψευδόστομος αμφορέας από την Αθήνα και οι ιδιωτικές ανασκαφές του 1871–2 στην περιοχή του Έξω Κεραμεικού

Το παρόν άρθρο παρουσιάζει έναν αδημοσίευτο ψευδόστομο αμφορέα από τον έξω Κεραμεικό της Αθήνας. Το αρχειακό υλικό που βρέθηκε πρόσφατα στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης και το οποίο σχετίζεται με την αγορά του ψευδόστομου αμφορέα μας βοηθά να τοποθετήσουμε το συγκεκριμένο αντικείμενο στο αρχαιολογικό του περιβάλλον και να αξιολογήσουμε τη σημασία του υπό το πρίσμα των ιδιωτικών ανασκαφών στον έξω Κεραμεικό τα έτη 1871–2. Επίσης παρέχει σημαντικές πληροφορίες για την οργάνωση του εμπορίου των αρχαιοτήτων στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα στην Αθήνα.
