Reviving the Dead: Entangled Histories in the Privatisation of the Tanzanian Sisal Industry

Abstract

This article examines how diverse and contradictory representations of the sisal industry under the British Mandate and independent socialist Tanzania are shaping the process of privatisation. By setting present-day socio-economic realities in the long-term historical context of transformation it dispels some of the assumptions that underlie celebration of market forces and the private sector.

Cet article examine la manière dont les représentations diverses et contradictoires de l'industrie du sisal sous le Mandat britannique et à l'époque de la Tanzanie socialiste indépendante façonnent le processus de privatisation. En situant les réalites socioéconomiques actuelles dans le contexte historique de transformation à long terme, il dissipe quelques hypothèses qui sous-tendent l'apologie du marché et du secteur privé.
