A mathematical model for the steady, mixed convection heat and mass transfer along a semi-infinite vertical plate embedded in a micropolar fluid in the presence of Soret and Dufour effects is presented. The non-linear governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are initially cast into dimensionless forms using local similarity transformations. The resulting system of equations is then solved numerically using the Keller-box method. The numerical results are compared and found to be in good agreement with previously published results as special cases of the present investigation. The non-dimensional velocity, microrotation, temperature and concentration profiles are displayed graphically for different values of coupling number, Soret and Dufour numbers. In addition, the skin-friction coefficient, the Nusselt number and Sherwood number are shown in a tabular form.

In this paper we first prove a theorem on the nonexistence of pyramidal polynomial basis functions. Then we present a new symmetric composite pyramidal finite element which yields a better convergence than the nonsymmetric one. It has fourteen degrees of freedom and its basis functions are incomplete piecewise triquadratic polynomials. The space of ansatz functions contains all quadratic functions on each of four subtetrahedra that form a given pyramidal element.

We propose a numerical solution to incorporate in the simulation of a system of conservation laws boundary conditions that come from a microscopic modeling in the small mean free path regime. The typical example we discuss is the derivation of the Euler system from the BGK equation. The boundary condition relies on the analysis of boundary layers formation that accounts from the fact that the incoming kinetic flux might be far from the thermodynamic equilibrium.

In this paper, we apply an a posteriori error control theory that we develop in a very recent paper to three families of the discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Reissner-Mindlin plate problem. We derive robust a posteriori error estimators for them and prove their reliability and efficiency.

There are a number of interesting applications where modeling elastic and/or viscoelastic materials is fundamental, including uses in civil engineering, the food industry, land mine detection and ultrasonic imaging. Here we provide an overview of the subject for both elastic and viscoelastic materials in order to understand the behavior of these materials. We begin with a brief introduction of some basic terminology and relationships in continuum mechanics, and a review of equations of motion in a continuum in both Lagrangian and Eulerian forms. To complete the set of equations, we then proceed to present and discuss a number of specific forms for the constitutive relationships between stress and strain proposed in the literature for both elastic and viscoelastic materials. In addition, we discuss some applications for these constitutive equations. Finally, we give a computational example describing the motion of soil experiencing dynamic loading by incorporating a specific form of constitutive equation into the equation of motion.

In this paper, we develop a multi-symplectic wavelet collocation method for three-dimensional (3-D) Maxwell’s equations. For the multi-symplectic formulation of the equations, wavelet collocation method based on autocorrelation functions is applied for spatial discretization and appropriate symplectic scheme is employed for time integration. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed method is multi-symplectic, unconditionally stable and energy-preserving under periodic boundary conditions. The numerical dispersion relation is investigated. Combined with splitting scheme, an explicit splitting symplectic wavelet collocation method is also constructed. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed methods are efficient, have high spatial accuracy and can preserve energy conservation laws exactly.

An application of the meshless Local Radial Basis Function Collocation Method (LRBFCM) in solution of incompressible turbulent combined forced and natural convection is for the first time explored in the present paper. The turbulent flow equations are described by the low-Re number к – ε model with Launder and Sharma and Abe et al. closure coefficients. The involved temperature, velocity, pressure, turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation fields are represented on overlapping 5-noded sub-domains through the collocation by using multiquadrics Radial Basis Functions (RBF). The involved first and second order partial derivatives of the fields are calculated from the respective derivatives of the RBF’s. The involved equations are solved through the explicit time stepping. The pressure-velocity coupling is based on Chorin’s fractional step method. The adaptive upwinding technique, proposed by Lin and Atluri , is used because of the convection dominated situation. The solution procedure is represented for a 2D upward channel flow with differentially heated walls. The results have been assessed by achieving a reasonable agreement with the direct numerical simulation of Kasagi and Nishimura for Reynolds number 4494, based on the channel width, and Grash of number 9.6×105. The advantages of the represented mesh-free approach are its simplicity, accuracy, similar coding in 2D and 3D, and straightforward applicability in non-uniform node arrangements.

The paper deals with periodic systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). A new approach to the investigation of variations of multipliers under perturbations is suggested. It enables us to establish explicit conditions for the stability and instability of perturbed systems.

In this paper, we investigate the superconvergence results for optimal control problems governed by parabolic equations with semidiscrete mixed finite element approximation. We use the lowest order mixed finite element spaces to discrete the state and costate variables while use piecewise constant function to discrete the control variable. Superconvergence estimates for both the state variable and its gradient variable are obtained.

It has been proposed that photosynthetic plankton can be used as a biological carbon pump tp absorb and sequester carbon dioxide in the ocean. In this paper, plankton population dynamics are simulated in a single stratified water column to predict carbon dioxide sequestering due to surface iron fertilization in deep ocean. Using a predator-prey model and realistic parameter values, iron fertilization was found to only cause temporary blooms up to 5 months in duration, and relatively small increases in adsorption of atmospheric CO2.

In this work we investigate the novel Kryzhnyi method for the numerical inverse Laplace transformation and apply it to the pricing problem of continuous installment options. We compare the results with the one obtained using other classical methods for the inverse Laplace transformation, like the Euler summation method or the Gaver-Stehfest method.

Fluids engineering is extremely important in a wide variety of materials processing systems, such as soldering, welding, extrusion of plastics and other polymeric materials, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), composite materials manufacturing. In particular, mixed convection due to moving surfaces is very important in these applications. Mixed convection in a channel, as a result of buoyancy and motion of one of its walls has received little research attention and few guidelines are available for choosing the best performing channel configuration, particularly when radiative effects are significant. In this study a numerical investigation of the effect of radiation on mixed convection in air due to the interaction between a buoyancy flow and an unheated moving plate induced flow in a uniformly heated convergent vertical channel is carried out. The moving plate has a constant velocity and moves in the buoyancy force direction. The principal walls of the channel are heated at uniform heat flux. The numerical analysis is accomplished by means of the commercial code Fluent. The effects of the wall emissivity, the minimum channel spacing, the converging angle and the moving plate velocity are investigated and results in terms of air velocity and temperature fields inside the channel and wall temperature profiles, both of the moving and the heated plates, are given. Nusselt numbers, both accounting and not for the radiative contribution to heat removal, are also presented.

In this paper we first present a CG-type method for inverse eigenvalue problem of constructing real and symmetric matrices M, D and K for the quadratic pencil Q(λ) = λ2M + λD + K, so that Q(λ) has a prescribed subset of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. This method can determine the solvability of the inverse eigenvalue problem automatically. We then consider the least squares model for updating a quadratic pencil Q(λ). More precisely, we update the model coefficient matrices M, C and K so that (i) the updated model reproduces the measured data, (ii) the symmetry of the original model is preserved, and (iii) the difference between the analytical triplet (M, D, K) and the updated triplet (Mnew, Dnew, Knew) is minimized. In this paper a computationally efficient method is provided for such model updating and numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An axisymmetric formulation for modeling three-dimensional deformation of structures of revolution is presented. The axisymmetric deformation model is described using the cylindrical coordinate system. Large displacement effects and material nonlinearities and anisotropy are accommodated by the formulation. Mathematical derivation of the formulation is given, and an example is presented to demonstrate the capabilities and efficiency of the technique compared to the full three-dimensional model.

Fourier transform is applied to remove the time-dependent variable in the diffusion equation. Under non-harmonic initial conditions this gives rise to a non-homogeneous Helmholtz equation, which is solved by the method of fundamental solutions and the method of particular solutions. The particular solution of Helmholtz equation is available as shown in [4, 15]. The approximate solution in frequency domain is then inverted numerically using the inverse Fourier transform algorithm. Complex frequencies are used in order to avoid aliasing phenomena and to allow the computation of the static response. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving 2-D diffusion equations.

The exact analytical expression of the period of a conservative nonlinear oscillator with a non-polynomial potential, is obtained. Such an oscillatory system corresponds to the transverse vibration of a particle attached to the center of a stretched elastic wire. The result is given in terms of elliptic functions and validates the approximate formulae derived from various approximation procedures as the harmonic balance method and the rational harmonic balance method usually implemented for solving such a nonlinear problem.

The energy gradient method has been proposed with the aim of better understanding the mechanism of flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow. In this method, it is demonstrated that the transition to turbulence depends on the relative magnitudes of the transverse gradient of the total mechanical energy which amplifies the disturbance and the energy loss from viscous friction which damps the disturbance, for given imposed disturbance. For a given flow geometry and fluid properties, when the maximum of the function K (a function standing for the ratio of the gradient of total mechanical energy in the transverse direction to the rate of energy loss due to viscous friction in the streamwise direction) in the flow field is larger than a certain critical value, it is expected that instability would occur for some initial disturbances. In this paper, using the energy gradient analysis, the equation for calculating the energy gradient function K for plane Couette flow is derived. The result indicates that K reaches the maximum at the moving walls. Thus, the fluid layer near the moving wall is the most dangerous position to generate initial oscillation at sufficient high Re for given same level of normalized perturbation in the domain. The critical value of K at turbulent transition, which is observed from experiments, is about 370 for plane Couette flow when two walls move in opposite directions (anti-symmetry). This value is about the same as that for plane Poiseuille flow and pipe Poiseuille flow (385-389). Therefore, it is concluded that the critical value of K at turbulent transition is about 370-389 for wall-bounded parallel shear flows which include both pressure (symmetrical case) and shear driven flows (anti-symmetrical case).

In this paper, we propose several solar cell designs based on metamaterials. Extensive numerical simulations of various designs with different materials are carried out. Our tests show that metamaterial solar cells are quite efficient, and over 80% and 90% absorption rates can be attained for solar spectrum and visible rays, respectively.

This paper deals with the study of transient waves in a homogeneous isotropic, solid halfspace with a permeating substance in the context of the theory of generalized elasto-thermodiffusion. The halfspace is assumed to be disturbed due to mechanical loads acting on its boundary. The model comprising of basic governing differential equations and boundary conditions has been solved by employing Laplace transform technique. Noting that the second sound effects are short lived, the small time approximations of solution for various physical quantities have been obtained and the results are discussed on the possible wave fronts. In case of continuous and periodic loads acting at the boundary, the displacement is found to be continuous at each wave front while it is discontinuous in case of impulsive load. The temperature and concentration fields are found to be discontinuous at all the wave fronts. The displacement, temperature change and concentration deviation due to impulsive, continuous and periodic mechanical loads have also been evaluated in the physical domain at all times by employing numerical inversion technique of integral transform. The computer simulated numerical results have been presented graphically in respect of displacement, temperature change and concentration deviation for brass. A significant effect of mass diffusion has been observed on the behaviour of mechanical and thermal waves.
