Summary

The Persian presence in Sri Lanka reveals this island’s hingelike function between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean. At the continental level, however, it was the entire Indian subcontinent which played a pivotal role between eastern and western Asia. Of course, India (or rather, the interconnected Indias) was no simple intermediary, but a set of active powers, each of which developed its own productions, transmitted its own worldview, knowledge, and values, and launched its ships on the trade routes.
