Summary

This chapter examines the advocacy for inclusive education of people with disabilities, based on the identification, selection, and analysis of four different pioneering advocacy experiences. Inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, these examples seek to foster inclusive education with a European scope and come from different sectors: the European disability movement, EU and governmental authorities, the Social Economy, and the students themselves. The approach to advocacy examples is developed by taking into consideration both the place of inclusive education in relevant European policies, and the fact that the competence on education in the EU basically remains at Member State level. Key factors which are believed to condition the level of success of advocacy actions regarding inclusive education at European level are identified by the authors. These factors highlight the relevance of the interconnection with all relevant stakeholders involved in the education process. Finally, some remarks are made with respect to the need for more robust and comparable indicators on inclusive education, the effect of the EU recession on inclusive education, and the importance to extend the inclusive perspective towards key education sectors such as those related to so-called STEM skills.
