Folio 217r has the red-ink heading “W. Walton” and a red-ink marginal heading in large red ink “Wodestret’; f. 218r has the red-ink heading “Wodestret”, and thereafter, up to and including f. 230r, the verso pages have the heading “Wode” and the recto pages “strete”.

Grant of aldermanry by Thomas de Arderne to Ralph Le Fevre [n.d. (1276–77)]

May those present and future know that I, Thomas de Arderne, son and heir of Sir Ralph de Arderne, knight, have given, granted, and by this my present deed have confirmed to Ralph Le Fevre, citizen of London, all that aldermanry with all its appurtenances and rights within the city of London and in a suburb of the same city, within and without the gates of Ludgate and Newgate, which was formerly that of the aforesaid Ralph my father, in the same city and the same suburb, and which came to me after my father’s death by hereditary right as the son and nearest heir of the same Ralph, and which Anketin de Auvergne had and held from my demise and grant for the term of his lifetime. To have and to hold by the aforesaid Ralph Le Fevre and his heirs or assigns from me and my heirs or assigns, or by whomsoever, whensoever he may wish to give, sell, bequeath or in any other way assign it, freely, quit, well and in peace, in fee and inheritance, in perpetuity. He, the aforesaid Ralph, and his heirs or assigns paying annually from it to me and my heirs or assigns one clove of gillyflower at the Feast of Easter for all secular services, customs, exactions, and demands and for all things. And I, the aforesaid Thomas and my heirs or assigns shall warrant the aforesaid aldermanry with all its appurtenances, rights, and its other incidentals to the aforesaid Ralph Le Fevre and his heirs or assigns and their heirs against all people both Christians and Jews and shall acquit and defend it by the aforesaid service. For this donation, grant, and confirmation by this present deed, warranty, acquittance, and defence the aforesaid Ralph has given me twenty marks of silver into my hands as gersum payment. And that this my donation, grant, and confirmation by this present deed of mine, warranty, acquittance, and defence shall obtain full strength of validity I have set the impression of my seal to this present deed.
