Chapter 15 - Implementation of a Family-Centered, School-Based Intervention to Prevent Student Academic and Behavioral Problems

Summary

This chapter explores what is known about effective organization-level consultation. Much of this is found in the management and business literature, but a portion relates specifically to school change efforts. It considers the deployment of specific consultation skills in the context of comprehensive school reform (CSR) efforts. The chapter examines the challenges and complexities involved at each stage of the change process. The application of core consultation skills within a hypothetical whole-school reform effort is described. Emphasis is placed on the need for thoughtful, targeted actions at key leverage points in the change process. The chapter further offers a brief history and research summary of the comprehensive school reform movement in the United States. The role of external support and assistance is also discussed. Initially, the consultant should explore the multiple perspectives that will come into play as the process evolves.
