A Bibliography
A Bibliography consists of an inventory of published documents regardless of their location and is by nature an attempt at completeness. By definition a Bibliography is opposed to a Catalogue which is the result of an inventory of a visible collection of documents situated at a concrete place and so will be complete.
This Bibliography
This bibliography is a subject bibliography hence contains bibliographic descriptions (i.e. entries) of documents published about one subject, viz. Fernando Sor (1778-1839). Its contents list both historical and contemporary documents.
The Classification
- The systematic classification and arrangement in chronological order The material as a whole has been classified systematically into two main sections and seven subsections, indicated by a mixed notation, i.e. by upper case Roman numerals and by capitals :
I. Music
A. Facsimiles
B. Editions
II. Literature
A. Catalogues, Bibliographic items, etc.
B. Source Material (documents, letters, etc.)
C. Biography, “Life and Works”, Studies, etc.
D. Annotations
E. Estudios sobre Fernando Sor - sor studies
Within each systematic classification, documents have been arranged chronologically by year of appearance (except for subsection IIE) thus giving an insight into the historical development of musicological research concerning Fernando Sor. Besides, it facilitates reference.
Where there are more than one document for a particular year, documents are listed in alphabetical order as follows :
- Documents published in the same year, are ordered by the name of their author (editor) after which the entries have been numbered consecutively (e.g. : IIA/1988-1, -2, -3 ; IIC/1954-1, -2, -3, -4, -5). Documents without a name of an author (editor) have been listed as N.N. (nomen nescio : Name unknown).
- Documents published in the same year, in the same periodical and in the case of more than one article by the same author (editor or N.N.) are ordered by their title. Thereafter entries have been numbered consecutively as well.
Arranging documents in alphabetical order by their title may disturb the chronological order of the issues and the page-sequence (e.g. : IIB/1797-1, -2, -3), or sometimes just the pagesequence (e.g. : IIC/1955-3, -4).
