Colonial domestic literature has been largely overlooked and is due for a reassessment. Mainly written by and for women, this fiction did more than any other genre to change prevailing ideas about emigration and colonial settler life. It also had a wider influence on nineteenth-century literature in general. This essay collection explores attitudes to colonialism, imperialism and race, as well as important developments in girlhood and the concept of the New Woman.
