Summary
On 12 May 1945, just a few days before the premiere of Der Sänger, the Bern Music Society—the organization responsible for the Bern City Orchestra—wrote to Schoeck to ask for a new orchestral work for the coming winter concert season. Schoeck replied in non-committal fashion, pointing out his precarious state of health and refusing to say either yes or no. His dislike of commissions had still not left him. He soon began sketching out an orchestral piece all the same. Then Gisela came home one day from school, full of enthusiasm for a poem they had just read there: “Sommernacht” (“A Summer's Night”) by Gottfried Keller. Schoeck knew the poem already, as he had wanted to set it to music for his Keller cycle Unter Sternen. It had eluded him then, but now he decided to make the poem the basis for his new orchestral work. The result was a “pastoral intermezzo” for string orchestra—essentially a short tone poem—with the same title as the poem itself. He finished it in July at the Weidhof.
Schoeck's health was far from fine this summer. A loss of appetite was one of the main symptoms (a cruel blow to a man who took great pleasure in good food). Nor were matters helped by the news that the little house he had rented on the Lettenholzstrasse for the past thirteen years was about to be sold.
