Summary
Our view of God tends to color our view of Jesus – in particular, our understanding of who he was or is. If, for instance, we have doubts about God’s existence or providence, we will tend to find Jesus misguided on his main teachings regarding God. If, however, we share Jesus’s general view of God, we will tend to find Jesus credible in his main teachings, and we may even acknowledge a special status for him in relation to God. We should ask, then, if there is a compelling basis for sharing his general view of God. Such a basis is arguably available in moral experience of a distinctive kind. Our examination of this kind of moral experience will supply a context for understanding who Jesus was or is. It will illuminate the kind of God he promoted and followed as the center of his life. Inadequate attention to his God will leave serious misunderstanding about Jesus in its wake.
