Summary
N.B. After another break of over two months since Heft 18 (ending on November 4, 1822), Heft 19 begins the relatively continuous sequence of conversation books lasting until the first week of March, 1827, only three weeks before Beethoven's death.
[Blatt 1r]
NEPHEW KARL [at Beethoven's apartment in suburban Windmühle, Obere Pfarrgasse No. 60; probably Sunday, January 19]: A Krainer. // Klein was a very fine man. // [He went] to Bohemia as a public teacher. // The one who is at Giannatasio's was a very educated man and had to leave the house because, during Blöchlinger's absence, he could not stand being ordered about by his [Blöchlinger’s] wife. // [Blatt 1v] An apathetic lady of fashion. //
He does what he can, but it is impossible for him to take care of everything. // [Drawings of a male and a female head.] //
SCHINDLER [at Beethoven's apartment, continuing the conversation; probably Sunday, January 19]: I’m going to take another walk into the City now, and then come directly from the office to your place. //
Don't let this rankle you at all; Bach will parry it with skill, and in short order. [//] [Blatt 2r]
We are speaking about Wrbna, that the emperor has lost his best friend, and the state [has lost] an honorable man. //
I shall make some copies tomorrow. //
We have heard that Castelli is already writing the opera libretto; I’ll make sure about it today. // But he also works a great deal in dramatic [things]. [//] [Blatt 2v] Drechsler is working on an opera in 1 act by Castelli, which has very funny material, but historically true, and with intrinsic value. // What do you think? Who among these great poets understands theatrical effect more—Schiller, Goethe, Kind, or Kotzebue? //
NEPHEW KARL: I am not talking about theatrical effect, but instead about intrinsic value. [//]
[Blatt 3r]
JOHANN VAN BEETHOVEN: I’ll accompany Karl back home [to Blöchlinger's Institute]. You just remain at home; the weather is too bad for you. //
