Summary
Wer jetzt auf der burg von Athen wandelt, dem stellt sich als eine schöne lösbare aufgabe dar, das Athen der tyrannenzeit in seiner zuständlichkeit zu schildern. leibhaft sieht man die menschen jener gesellschaft vor sich, und, was mehr bedeutet, man kann empfinden, wofür sie leben, wo sie ihren schatz und ihr herz haben. es geht ihnen gut und sie geniessen ihr leben. sie haben an ihrer eignen existenz freude und suchen die εὐδαιμονíα im ὄλβος. es ist eine zeit, geschlagen in enge fesseln der convention und der mode; vielleicht merkt man nur ex eventu, dass vieles überlebte da ist, und ein neues leben sich zu regen beginnt, das diese fesseln sprengen wird. den ungeheuren umschwung der Perserkriege und der demokratischen ἀϱετἠ schätzt man nirgend so richtig, wie wenn man im sechsten jahrhundert wandelt. schon die heroische naktheit des Harmodios erscheint wie ein protest gegen die ceremoniöse toilette eines Aristion. dass die jünglinge und mädchen des Parthenonfrieses grossmütter und väter gehabt haben sollen, die sich anzogen wie die ϰόϱαι, die unsere archaeologische jugend so hübsch als tanten bezeichnet hat, sich einen lockenkranz um die schläfen frisiren liessen und die arme mit ekelhafter grazie weit vom leibe hielten, damit die geknifften fältchen der mantillenkanten nicht zerknautscht würden, muss man sich mühsam klar machen.
